Things feel very real now with less than 200 days until World Masters Games 2017. Training is starting to ramp up for our athletes, excitement levels at WMG2017 HQ are hitting an all-time high, and those sitting on the fence about competing need to ask themselves “do I really want to miss out on the biggest multi-sport event in the world, in one of the most beautiful countries on earth?”

Recently we ran a competition on our Facebook page celebrating 200 days to go until Games-time. We asked our followers to share their top training tip, and had over 100 people respond with some amazing training advice. We’ve highlighted 10 of these below, followed by 10 of the things Team WMG2017 love to do in Auckland. And if you’re still deliberating over getting involved in the Games, the 10 at the end are to get you over the fence!

 

10 training tips leading up to WMG2017:

  1. Have a plan for what you want to get out of each training session or event, and celebrate your successes.
  2. Train your mind like you train your body. Keeping your mental jewel strong is as important as the physical aspect.
  3. There's nothing like actual competition to identify issues that need to be fixed.
  4. Train in any weather as long as it's safe. It’s great for mental toughness and means the weather on the day becomes less of a factor for you mentally.
  5. Attend training fully equipped with all your gear, well rested, hydrated and nutrition fueled for energy and endurance.
  6. Train with a team. Team mates challenge you, fire you up, and understand what you're going through – because they are right there with you.
  7. If you have kids, train with them sometimes. Inspire them with the fact that their competitive athletic career doesn't end at school.
  8. Always try to finish the session you start, it will boost your confidence. 
  9. Believe in yourself and keep going. It’s hard to beat a person who never gives up.
  10. Train with a smile and have fun, you can always incorporate a bit of fun into training.

 

10 great things to do in Auckland from Team WMG2017:

  1. Lunch in the sun at one of the many fabulous restaurants downtown around Viaduct Harbour, before taking a wander over the bridge to Wynyard Quarter and Silo Park.
  2. Harbour Cruise over to Waiheke Island for the day, and hire electronic bikes to help you get around the multiple vineyards and beaches.
  3. Visit Mission Bay on the glorious Auckland waterfront where the half marathon and triathlon will be held. Bars and restaurants line the road across from the beach. Grab an ice-cream and get sand between your toes (hopefully not in your cone) as you watch kids make sand castles and watch the boats sail by.
  4. Indulge in culinary delights at the French Market in Parnell, La Cigale – on every Saturday and Sunday until 1.30pm.
  5. Take a scenic drive out west to Piha, a wild wind-swept black sand beach. Pack a picnic, have a swim in the crashing waves, order hot chips from the beach store, climb the infamous Lion Rock and soak up the fresh sea air.
  6. While out west stop off at the local Huia Foodstore. A more tranquil setting, you will not find in downtown Auckland.
  7. Tick off the north shore coastal walk, setting out at Milford then along Takapuna Beach to Devonport.
  8. Visit Auckland Zoo – especially the world-class precinct, Te Wao Nui, which is home to New Zealand’s native treasures.
  9. Go country at the Sunday Farmer’s Market at Clevedon, where you can grab breakfast and a coffee and try a range of locally made and grown fresh foods. Clevedon is home to the cycling road race.
  10. If you’re up for some Kiwi humour, laugh out loud at a comedy show at The Classic – the home of live New Zealand comedy.
