WMG2017 competition goal
Have fun and stay healthy.
Internationally renowned volleyball coach, Hugh McCutcheon, and his credentials in one of the world’s biggest sports are without peer.
The Dunedin-born, United States based volleyball coach guided the United States men’s volleyball team to gold in Beijing 2008 and coached the USA women’s team to silver in London four years later. That accolade established him as the only head coach of any US Olympic team sport to lead a men’s and women’s team to podium finishes. Hugh’s Olympic success saw him named USOC Coach of the Year in 2008 and in 2013 he received the USA Volleyball honour of the “All-time Great Coach” Award.
Hugh is now head coach of the NCAA Division 1 University of Minnesota’s women’s volleyball team. He knows, having experienced international multi sports events himself, what an awesome life experience they can be. “I’m passionate about sport and New Zealand so it was an easy decision, and indeed an honour, to be asked to represent WMG2017 as an ambassador.”
“This is a wonderful opportunity to showcase New Zealand’s natural beauty, legendary hospitality and unique culture to people from all around the world. If I were to recommend one “must do” activity while my international friends are in New Zealand it would be whale watching in Kaikoura. It’s great to be so close to the whales and also the scenery and landscape in the area are amazing.“
Sticking with what he knows best, Hugh says indoor or beach volleyball is most likely to be his sport of choice come Games time in 2017.
