WMG2017 competition goal
Retain our gold medal from Torino, Italy WMG2013
A veteran of the Canadian masters basketball circuit, Toronto-based Jude Kelly is a walking, talking passionate advocate for all things sports – especially basketball and masters sport.
Following an impressive collegiate basketball career including achieving three-time All-Canadian All-Star status and induction into two halls of fame, Jude dedicated his boundless energy and enthusiasm into masters basketball. He’s one of the driving forces behind the successful Stooges Basketball team which captured the gold medal (50+ Division) at the Turin, Italy World Masters Games 2013, and is also the Canadian representative for FIMBA (Federation of International Masters Basketball Association).
Jude and his teammates are looking forward to defending their gold medal title in Auckland in April 2017. “New Zealand has been on my destination bucket list and became a priority thanks to the Lord of the Rings movies. The World Masters Games are a perfect for me to combine playing the sport I love and visiting this remarkable and beautiful country.”
With predictable bias, Jude says basketball is one of the few team sports athletes can play competitively well into their 70s. “When I was in my late 30s, a friend and I were warming up, watching two teams in our division play each other. They were decent but we felt our team was better. Later we found out the two teams were in fact in the older division – 20 years older! At that moment, my goal was to one day have some younger players make the same comment about me and my team. Bring on Auckland!”
