To get wet as much as possible!
"Mr Versatile" aptly describes the stellar sailing career of Mark Orams.
New Zealand and international champ in multiple sailing classes, four times world masters champion in the Laser Radial class, New Zealand youth sailing selector and Olympic coach, Whitbread Round the World yacht race winner aboard Steinlager 2 and member of the Team New Zealand 2000 America’s Cup team are just some of the highlights of Mark’s on-the-water career.
A busy professor, Head of Auckland University of Technology’s School of Sport and Recreation and Associate Dean at AUT Millennium, Mark still finds time to participate and support sailing as vice-patron of the Torbay Sailing Club which will host the sailing events at World Masters Games 2017.
A philosophy that masters’ sport is about activity and action underpins Mark’s approach to not only sailing but his passion for all water sports. “We are doers not watchers,” says Mark.
Among his many community interests, Mark is a trustee and board member of the Sir Peter Blake Marine Education and Recreation Centre, The New Zealand Sailing Trust, the New Zealand International Yaching Trust, as well as Project Litefoot, a charity which helps sports clubs reduce their environmental footprint and save money for sport.
