Sir John Walker, KNZM, CBE, World Masters Games 2017 Auckland Goodwill Ambassador

Sir John Walker is regarded as one of the finest athletes New Zealand has produced.  His achievements on tracks around the world is quite simply amazing, beginning in 1974 when he shot to world prominence with a spine chilling race in the 1500m at the Commonwealth Games in Christchurch, New Zealand in a world record time.  World records and an Olympic gold medal followed in a 20 year athletic career.

Following his retirement, Sir John turned his attention to serving his local community and the wider Auckland region, firstly as a Manukau City Councillor and subsequently as an Auckland Councillor.  His proudest achievement as a councillor is starting the ‘John Walker Find your Field of Dreams’ charity which encourages underprivileged children and youth from his birth place South Auckland to participate in sport.

In his role as WMG2017 Auckland Goodwill Ambassador, Sir John will turn his sporting support to athletes at the other end of the age spectrum.  He says he is looking forward to the event and the chance to see iconic New Zealand sports people engaging in the Games alongside everyday sports people from all around the world.  “World Masters Games 2017 will provide wonderful exposure for New Zealand and Auckland on the international stage and I encourage visitors to check out the amazing range of wonderful local restaurants from Bracu in the south to the Wynyard quarter precinct on our waterfront and the wineries on Waiheke Island.”

Sir John will be an active spectator at WMG2017 and is looking forward to attending as many sports as possible, especially the athletics competition.
